Item Metadata only THE POWERS OF THE POLICE, AND THEIR LIMITATIONS(ebsu repository office, 2022-02-20) NJOKU CLETUS IKECHUKWUThe Police Force is a creature of the Constitution. For it to function effectively, the law has bestowed upon the Police with enormous powers. The laws that give the police powers equally provides for their limitations in the forms of checks and balances. In the exercise of these powers given to them by the law, members of the Police Force abuse same by encroaching on the fundamental rights of citizens. The presence ofa police officer discomforts members of the public to the extent that they try as much as possible to avoid any act that will bring them into close contacts with the police. This dissertation sets out to explore the powers of the police, and their limitations. The researcher has also traced the historical background' of the Police Force and the problems the members of the force are facing in carrying out their constitutional duties. The research methodology employed by the researcher .conslst of a study of relevant textbooks, journals, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 2010 (as amended), Statutes relevant to the Nigeria police Force and some decide cases. The research was summed up with recommendations, which includes better funding of the Nigeria Police, proper remunerations, adequate personnel, effective and functional judiciary to effectively checkmate the activities and powers of the police. By so doing the image of the Force will be restored and public trust equally restored.
